Description
A natural process single origin from Kinama Hill in Burundi, selected after tasting for its crisp, berry-led sweetness.
Kinama Hill sits in the Nyabiraba commune of Burundi's Bujumbura Rural province, at around 1,650 metres above sea level, with farms on the slopes above climbing a little higher still. Like most Burundian coffee, this is not a single estate. Smallholder farmers on the surrounding hills deliver their cherry to the washing station, so a bag like this is the work of a lot of different hands. The variety is Red Bourbon, which is where so much of that Burundian sweetness and clarity comes from.
Being a natural, the cherry is dried whole in the sun rather than washed off the seed first, and that is where the fruit in this cup comes from. Cherries and vanilla in the aroma, then sweet berries to taste, crisp but juicy, with a medium malic acidity and a clean finish. It is a typical expression of Burundi coffee, done well.
Roasted medium, which keeps the fruit intact without pushing it anywhere overripe or jammy.
